Chris Johnston from The Age writes:

Real tunesmiths, delicate and pained and observant as can be; songs about the sun rising and the detail contained with the human heart and other such big and small truths. Songwriter Andre Hooke's voice is a thing of beauty. The music made here is so, so easy to fall for and fall into.

The album is due for release on August 12th. It will be available on vinyl, CD and in MP3 formats, initially from the Departed Sounds online store followed by iTunes and all good retail outlets.

Arches Over The Sun is a grand, sprawling affair which sees the band effortlessly melding musical styles and genres to produce an album which is both richly textured and deeply moving. It is also something of a departure from the style of khancoban’s previous alt-country and folk influenced releases.

This is most evident on tracks such as Until it Takes You Over, This Block and This Isn’t Madness where pounding drums, driving bass, ethereal synths and gritty guitars combine to form a swirling, edgy and heavy sound that manages to be both wild and perfectly controlled at the same time.

On tracks such as Cause and Chaos, Things I Can’t See and What The Heart Knows, the band give a nod to their past, managing – sometimes with a wry wink – to combine country, folk, pop and blue-eyed soul to produce a sound which is as uplifting as it is upbeat.

Carefully littered in between these extremes are simple and refined tracks of stark isolation such as No One Knows I’m Here, Do Not Trust The Horse and the darkly mysterious closing track, On Becoming.

It is in these quieter moments that khancoban’s greatest asset comes to the fore. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Andre Hooke’s voice, around which the album is woven, is gloriously unique. It a voice possessed of both great strength and a delicate fragility.

Essentially, Hooke’s voice represents what Arches Over The Sun - and khancoban as a band - have to offer the patient listener.

Like the album’s artwork, its myriad pathways and lights representative of the structure and function of the human brain, their music is a kind of map; certainly of the mind, but most especially and importantly, of the heart.

khancoban hit the tarmac in support of "Arches Over The Sun" in August. Don't miss them.

Although Lindsay's chosen tools of delivery - voice and guitar – still remain front and centre, the surrounding arrangements and instrumentation have become more intricate and detailed, thanks in no small part to the influence of producer Myles Mumford, whose delicate orchestrations and subtle production touches serve to highlight - rather than take attention from - the sparse nature of Lindsay's songs.

You can download both tracks right now for free. The supplied package also includes the single artwork.

The Workers Club presents a side to the local and independent music and arts community rarely publicly celebrated or acknowledged….

The Independent Record Label!

In today’s heady climate of ups and downs of the record-selling industry, these people are some of the hardest working and often under-appreciated pioneers, music obsessives and passionate music lovers out there.

We think that’s worth celebrating, and are proud to present a series of nights entitled the ‘Released Series’ specifically to acknowledge these local and 100% independent labels, with each night personally curated by the person (or people) behind the labels, showcasing their respective label’s favourite bands, artists and DJs each week.

As part of the ‘Released Series,’ the Workers Club will be running the ‘Released Record Stand,’ a half venue-half independent record store, erecting a semi-permanent record stand set up each week giving all labels involved the opportunity to have their releases available for sale not only on the night of their curated show, but for the duration of the series with labels taking 100% of all sales.

Head to the store to listen to the tracks and/or pick up a copy. Vinyls are pre-order only at this stage, MP3 files are available now.

Originally the solo workings of Gabriel Lewis, the band - formerly called Three Month Sunset - cautiously awoke in 2005.

2007 saw Gabriel win www.ainr.com's Artist In Residency competition (judged by Sigur Rós, Flood and Alan Moulder). Now as Lowtide, the band's sound has since evolved from a single ambient, soaring, textured guitar into the band's current, larger, configuration.

Lewis' guitar remains collectively transmitted by way of several amplifiers but is now framed by Lucy Buckeridge, Anton Jakovljevic (The Morning After Girls) and Giles Simon (The Sun Blindness).

This addition of drums, dual bass and female/male vocals further emphasise the original dynamics, but also widen the aural spectrum. In 2010, the band released an EP (You Are My Good Light) to a sold out crowd at Cherry Bar and have played with the likes of A Place To Bury Strangers, Steve Kilbey (The Church) & Ricky Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre).

Lowtide also recently travelled to New Zealand where they were invited to play two sets at the wonderful Campus a Low Hum Festival in February 2011, sharing the stage with the likes of Caribou, My Disco and Toro Y Moi, as well as playing at Applecore Backyard Festival.

It has been quite a while since I was entirely transfixed by a band ... their lush dream pop sounds like Beach House put through a shoegaze blender

www.fasterlouder.com.au
